CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Most Educated Cities 11-25-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
There are two national rankings that identify areas of the “Most Educated,” one by metropolitan areas and the other by cities. The first identifies a national ranking by US News and World Report using Census Bureau information that identifies the ten most educated metropolitan areas of 300,000 or greater in population.
The second ranks the one hundred largest cities in the nation by educational levels compiled for by Men’s Health magazine. Their methodology includes information from the Dept of Education’s high school graduation rates along with US Census bureau figures on school enrollment and education levels of people over 25. It also includes information from SimplyMap, to identify how many households have student loans or take adult-education courses.
In both cases a California city makes the ranking.

California when compared to the rest of the nation has a slightly higher rate of its population with bachelors and graduate or professional degrees. But unfortunately, it also has more residents with less than a ninth grade education; 10.5 percent versus 6.2 percent nationally. The following ranking was compiled by the California Dept. of Finance’s Demographics Research Unit. It ranks the most educated cities in California in excess of 20,000 in population.
