Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
California does not appear to have a significant business environment that is conducive to the creation and development of small business according to the latest annual Small Business Vitality Rankings by the American City Business Journals.
The rankings are based on a methodology that includes population growth, employment growth and small business growth, defined as businesses that employ less than 99.
The following identifies the top ten “Best Cities” for business vitality rankings along with the bottom ten. Also included are the rankings on the rest of the California cities including changes in their rankings from 2010.
TOP TEN BEST CITIES 1. Austin, TX 2. Oklahoma City, OK 3. Charleston, SC 4. Charlotte, NC 5. Seattle, WA 6. Tulsa, OK 7. Raleigh, NC 8. Denver, CO 9. Washington DC 10. NY, NY
BOTTOM TEN CITIES 91. Las Vegas, NV 92. Worchester, MA 93. Lakeland, FL 94. Stockton down from 92 95. Bakersfield down from 66 96. Sacramento down from 95 97. Springfield, MA 98. Detroit, MI 99. Riverside-San Bernardino down from 91 100. Modesto down from 87
Rest of California San Jose jumped from 75 to 20; Los Angeles up from 47 to 45; San Diego up from 67 to 57;San Francisco-Oakland 61 down from 45; Oxnard-Thousand Oaks 78 down from 35 and Fresno 86 up from 90.
