CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Drunkest Cities 04-27-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
The average American consumes roughly two and a half gallons of alcohol each year, giving our country the 56th highest alcohol consumption rate in the world, according to data released this year from the World Health Organization.
Roughly 5% of those in the U.S. admitted to heavy drinking, defined by the Center for Disease Control as men having more than two drinks a day and women having more than one, and a full 15% binge drink, meaning that men have had five or more drinks at a time on one or more occasions and women have had four or more.
The website MainStreet analyzed survey numbers collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and compiled the top 10 "cities where residents drink the most."

However, last year, Men’s Health did a similar analysis based on criteria like drunken driving statistics, number of deaths from alcoholic liver disease, and "the severity of DUI penalties. Unfortunately, Fresno was ranked #1 and other California cities included Bakersfield #10; Modesto #12; Sacramento #20; Los Angeles #48; Anaheim #57; Oakland #75; San Jose #79; San Francisco #86. Go figure!
