CALIFORNIA BUSINESS MINUTE Best Cities for Walking 01-24-11
Hi, I am Tim Johnson and welcome to the California Business Minute.
San Francisco is ranked the best and is joined by 5 other cities from the Golden State for the “Best Cities for Walking in the Nation.” According to the American Podiatric Medical Association and Sperling’s Best Places.
BEST CITIES FOR WALKING
1. San Francisco 2. Boston 3. New York 4. Philadelphia 5. Chicago 6. Washington DC 7. Seattle 8. Honolulu 9. Portland, OR 10. Oakland 11. Minneapolis 12. San Diego 13. Los Angeles 14. Milwaukie 15. Baltimore 16. Rochester 17. Santa Ana 18. San Jose 19. Denver 20. New Orleans
The study ranked San Francisco #1 because it claims the city has 12 agencies that devote time to walking issues. Oakland received high marks because it converted a parking lot into a town square, linking its shopping district to public transit. San Diego made the list due to a variety of pedestrian oriented infrastructure improvements. Los Angeles made the list because the Augustus F. Hawkins Natural Park offers lush vegetation and paths for strolling on 8.5 acres right in the heart of the city. Santa Ana made the list because of its partnership with the Historical Society to offer 3-hour walking tours of the city's cultural downtown. San Jose made the list because it has more hiking and walking trails than any of the cities reviewed.
I am Tim Johnson and this has been the California Business Minute.
